After looking at Whiteread’s House sculpture in more detail I decided I wanted to try and cast the negative space of an object. Using the same doll’s house from the previous sculptures I used the furniture that was inside. Fortunately they didn’t have a bottom to them so I filled the bed, sofa and chair with Plaster Of Paris. Once set I removed them. The first attempt of the chair and sofas broke as I didn’t line the furniture with anything so the plaster was hard to remove and broke. However the bed was fine and I like the detail of the bed produced. I made the sofa and chair again and lined the inside of the furniture with Vaseline to see if that would make the plaster come out easier once set. This did work, however it didn’t produce as much detail as the previous. On the broken pieces you could see the indent of ‘Made in China’ on the bottom of them and the indents of the ‘décor’ on them. Overall I think the negative space sculptures were more successful than the positive ones made in the previous experiment and that the negative space created more detail and texture.
